SERAMBI JAZZ will hold a concert on Friday, April 17, 2009 with Florian Ross Trio. Florian Ross is a pianist/composer/arranger from Cologne, Germany (See his profile here). Florian’s visit in Indonesia won’t only be for concert, but also for hosting a 5 day Workshop as well.
The workshop will focus on a very important subject: “composition”. This will really be beneficial for you who want to deepen your knowledge in jazz, especially for you who are teaching in music schools.

Roullandi – (08161977776, email: roullandi@yahoo.com)
Registration will be available until April 12, 2009.
notes:
For point #1, it will be better if you understand jazz terminology well enough, because you will practice to play jazz music directly
For point #4, With only 15 seats, your commitment to attend the workshop seriously is needed. If you can’t do that, it’s better to give the chance to other musicians.
Next, there will be a meeting at the SERAMBI JAZZ WORKSHOP’s preparation at Goethe Institut. (the exact date and time will be informed soon).
Here’s a note from Florian Ross:
Jazz Composition – An Underestimated Force
When we play Jazz (or related improvised music), in 90% of the cases, we use a so-called “tune”, arrangement, composition, to transport ourselves and the listener into a musical world that would not exist without this “catapult”.
Have you ever had the feeling that playing a “great” jazz composition makes you play differently? That’s exactly what I am talking about.
Additionally to this elevating effect of good jazz compositions they of course also exist by themselves, besides providing a platform for improvisation – just like in “classical” music.
In my workshop among other things I will discuss the following aspects of jazz composition:
- preparation, organisational techniques, notation
- pre-composition
- gathering of material
- classical composition techniques
- counterpoint
- instrumentation/orchestration
- rhythm section
- arranging vs. composing
Due to the fact that there will be people from different musical backgrounds joinig in, I welcome all input from the group! Every question is allowed to be asked! Actually, maybe except for “what strings do you play” or “what reed do you use”
I will play you a lot of different music that influenced me and show you how you can learn from the thousands of people who’ve done Jazz before you! If we manage to get a band together, I would like each member of the group to write one composition during the workshop that will be performed at the end!
Please do bring recordings and/or scores and your instrument!
Looking forward to meeting you all!
