We just received the news earlier today from Dwiki Dharmawan and Farabi Music Education Center regarding a warming up concert of Paduan Suara Mahasiswa Universitas Padjadjaran (PSM UNPAD) or Unpad Choir that will be held in two cities, Jakarta and their hometown Bandung. Calling the concert as “A Splendid Symphony of Indonesia: Another Journey, Another Story”, the choir is aiming a big step to join the international choir competition of 48th Montreux Choral Festival in Switzerland on April 10-14, 2012. For that, they are making the pre-competition concert which is open for public in both cities stated earlier.
“Another Journey, Another Story” becomes the start of the cultural mission of PSM Unpad “A Splendid Symphony of Indonesia”. Other than presenting songs for the competition, they are going to bring some traditional songs and dances including the traditional Dayak and Saman dance, angklung and French traditional song.
Winning the international competition is not new anymore to them. They won the first prize under Advance Mixed Choir and Female Choir category at the 24th Praga Competition and Festival in 2010. This time they are going to compete under the same category led by Arvin Zeinullah. PSM Unpad will become the Asian representative as well as becoming the first Indonesian choir to bring up our art and cultural richness in front of the Switzerland’s audience and judges. While they are going abroad, this fifth cultural mission of PSM Unpad/Unpad Choir will continue their journey to hold a concert at Le Sentier, Switzerland on April 13, 2012 and Sorbonne University in France on April 18,2012.
Let’s take a closer look to it. The Unpad Choir is an organization that has been established since 1978. Now it’s become one of the most important Student Activity Unit inside Padjadjaran University. Now it consists of more than 150 members and could already claimed themselves as one of the best university student’s choirs. Up until now they have participated and won many competitions both local and international and graced many big events. For example they sang traditional songs from Asia and Africa in front of the head of states/delegations in Asian-African Conference Summit and the Commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of Asian-African Conference (1995-2005) at Gedung Merdeka on April 24, 2005 or when they got the honored to perform live at the declaration on the establishment of the Asean Charter in front of the Indonesian President and ASEAN Foreign Ministers in 2008.
Standing as the music director in this occasion is Arvin Zeinullah. He was active in PSM Unpad and participated in lots of annual concerts and festivals in Indonesia and abroad until he graduated from the Faculty of Communication Unpad in 2002. During that moment he was also active in Twilite Chorus and Jakarta Conservatory Vocal Ensemble in Jakarta. Now he stands as a member of Batavia Madrigal Singers under Avip Priatna.
He started coaching PSM Unpad since 2001 and successfully brought the choir to win some prestigious competitions such as the 1st winner of FPS ITB 2002, President Cup of the National Choir Competition in Jakarta, runner up of International de Musica de Cantonigrosdi Barcelona, Spain 2004 and the second runner up of Artsong-Classic and Folklore at 1 PICCC 2009 at Parahyangan University, Bandung. Two years ago the Unpad Choir bagged the Gold Diplome and 1st prize in Female Choir category at the Praga Cantat Competition and Festival in Prague under his coaching. Other than his activity in Unpad, he’s also guide Agria Swara choir of IPB since 2003 where again he presented many awards and achievements. Arvin was also one of the Indonesian representative at the Asian Youth Choir, Niigata, Japan for 3 years (2004, 2005 and 2007) and active as a member of Musicanova Chamber Choir and Asiaccatura. Other than his participation in Batavia Madrigal Singers and coaching the universities, he also works as vocal instructor in Cantabile Music Studio and Gita Svara Jakarta.
As the Unpad choir is holding such important mission in representing Unpad, Bandung and Indonesia along with all the art and cultural richness of our land in the international scene, it’s a must for us to support them. Let’s show our support by coming to their concert and wish them all the best for the competition. There are over hundreds of thousands colors of our cultural heritage in diversity divided into numerous art-forms. It’s time for us to show some of them to the world through the Unpad Choir’s international mission.
