If you live in Bandung and like the pop side of jazz, where you can groove along with some RnB, funk and some other light jazz bites, KlabJazz has a program to fulfill that need. Yes, since September 14, 2012 KlabJazz launched the spin-off where the pop jazz bands can make a home, it’s called Groove Collective. The show was presented twice in Potluck Kitchen, but for some reasons the event paused after the second one on October 12. One month in hiatus, now KlabJazz announced that the Groove Collective #03 is back, but it’s going to be moved to the venue where KlabJazz has launched Prime Time Friday Nite Jazz for 5 times, Prime Cafe & Bistro. Considering the location which lies at the heart of Bandung (at Dago area), it should be easy to reach from wherever you live.
“From our own experience, actually the ‘non-jazz’ bands have given big, significant contribution to our jazz events. So it’s about time to launch a program where they can pour their creativity out”, said the coordinator of KlabJazz, Dwi Cahya Yuniman to us before the premiere edition started two months ago. So here, while you can still smell the jazz fragrance, the bands will bring ‘friendlier’ music to wider segment of music listeners. Occasionally you can also have pure jazz bands too supporting the event. One thing for sure, this program will never be too difficult to digest, even if you’re not a jazz fans at all.
For the third edition, 5 bands are set to fill it up. First, let’s see Raisa Fatma. She caught our eyes first of all when she competed in Kampoeng Jazz auditions last year with her group Sunday Ice Cream. The band didn’t make it, but Raisa Fatma successfully charmed us and the rest of judges. Now she’s building her career as soloist. After several participation at KlabJazz events, now she’s back again with her bands including the guitarist with smooth touch formerly from PAGI and Kania Belle, Ismail Haryadi, Ikbal on keyboard, Sam on bass, Ivan on drums, Widi on sax and Aulia as the backing vocal. You should see this girl since she has lovely voice, energetic moves and of course, beautiful.
If Jakarta has Starlite as a female jazz band, Bandung has Jazzy Juice. You’d be surprise to see how great ladies could jazz themselves on stage, not just as singers but as highly capable musicians. This group basically has 3 main members inside, Dyah Sekar (piano), Adisty Zulkarnaen (drums) and Arnie Christanti (bass), but they often expand the formation by having two saxophonist, Syifa Nurtari Ulfah and Riri Derry Novalia. The funky bop we know as hard bop is their main course, as the sweet tasty piano sound of Dyah blends with Adisty’s attractive drumming and Arnie’s strong groovy bass line plus two young ladies blowing their saxes in front. But they can also come out with other sides of jazz too, all the way to reach the pop-ish corners. Watch them and you’ll know that they can play as good as all-male bands, if not even better.
The third winner of Jatinangor Jazz Event 3 auditions Scarlet joins the lineup too. This band is unique for the complexity of compositions over the songs they play. What they play is not easy, but they do play neat, making the songs come out ear-catchy and easy to listen to. This band which is rooted more in soul funk will once again bring their multi-flavored goodies at the Groove Collective 3. From Bogor, a band named Outside Project is going to represent the joy of fusion funk.
Last but not least, Inspiration is also listed in this edition. Patrick (vocals), Dicko (keys), Billy (guitar), Khrisna (bass), Jerry (sax) and Rully (drums) has participated in many events, from school events to weddings, to small jazz events all the way to big festivals. The band also has original songs where some were included in compilations album. Funky fusion with tasty groove lines is within reach with this band.
Looking at the lineup and the menus they are bringing, you have no reason to miss it. Served free in the second Friday of the month, Groove Collective offers light jazz to accompany your weekend. All you have to do is come, and get the best out of it.
