As Indonesia goes into the general election day, we are getting ready to hold the next episode of our regular event, BRAGA JAZZ NIGHT #58. This event which is made in cooperation with the Braga CityWalk comes once a month, every third Thursday of the month. It is set as a community jazz event to support the young generation of musicians who share interest in jazz as well as socializing the beauty of jazz to the society. Everyone can be a part of the stage, everyone are welcome to enjoy the presentation. It’s coming soon on 18 April 2019 located at the main entrance of Braga CityWalk, starting from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm, totally FREE of any charge.
Coincidentally this edition will be held right on the next day after the general election. We hope there will be no chaotic situation afterwards so this event can run on schedule.
As usual 3 bands have given us their confirmation for this 58th edition. Two of them are bands with talented young musicians, while one band comprises of the combination of teacher and student, representing the music school that has been supporting us for over 2 years. Let’s take a closer look at them. Roll the dice, here we go.
First, don’t miss the first appearance of a pop jazz band PUDING LAVA. This band was established on 9 February 2016 in Bandung. According to the band, they chose jazz pop to express their love towards jazz.
Puding Lava is built upon 6 players: Mukti Bawono (keys), Muhammad Mauli Rahman (guitar), Ochika Widiaritami (vocal), Muhamad Agustio (drum), Alwi Hidayat Harahap (bass) and Arul Ramadhan (saxophone). All young but passionate with the mission to be among the top bands in jazz one day. To achieve that, they are commited to bring their best shot in any event they are in, surely including this one.
Speaking of event, they have participated in several competitions. That includes the Jazzphoria earlier this year, the Maranatha Competition and Mahakarya Competition which they won first prize. For a relatively new band in town, this band has quite an achievement. So of course they should grace our monthly event.
What do you have in mind when you hear Puding Lava? We imagine something sweet, delicious taste with yummy look. This band has pop jazz inside their veins, which makes them possible to bring all those things appear through their music. Let’s give them warm welcome and enjoy their apperarance.
Found next in the lineup is a jazz fusion-based band of youngsters consisting students and alumnus of STiMB. The name of the band is DEAN’S KOLEGA KATOB.
Just like the name of the band, it’s led by a guitarist who’s already graduated from that mentioned music college, Dean Muliawan aka Dean Bach. According to Dean, the band began as the project for fun, mainly set to fulfill his regular gigs. But since they clicked, it turned out to be a solid formation for any kind of stage.
Other than Dean Bach himself (guitar), the band comprises of his colleague such as Fransiscus Firman (flute) and Arif Andrian (drum), Langga Jati (bass), Badai Keke (guitar), Wisnu Octa Triani (guitar) and Sheira (keyboard). Colleague, that’s where the word “Kolega” came from. As for “Katob”, it’s a reverse of “Botak”, in English: Bald, referring to the way Dean wants his head to be.
Individually these cats are equipped with good technique, which for us shows how good the college has been equipping them. We know this, because they have landed here on our stage supporting a young male singer Yohan Davita two months ago in the 56th edition (read it here: http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-night-56-the-report/). Other than that, we have been welcoming so many students/former students of STiMB from the first edition, so we are excited to have this next generation.
If last time they appeared helping out their friend, now it’s the chance for Dean’s Kolega Katob to have the spotlight for themselves. If you like Jazz-Rock Fusion, don’t miss this band.
We are grateful to have the support from an educational istitute which is focusing on enhancing the productivity of its students from the creativity sides, GITA BAWANA. One of its teacher, also the drummer of West Java Syndicate, Zahar Mustilaq has been kind to lend us his drum and keyboard that makes us able to keep this event running. They have been doing so for more than 2 years, we can never thank them enough.
As an educational institute, Gita Bawana which is located in the Southern part of Bandung has variety of classes including Music Production, Traditional, Modern Dance Course, Modelling and obviously Music Course. Jazz is an integrated and important part of the music course in its curriculum, which for us is no wonder since there are quite many skilled jazz musicians working there as the teachers.
This time we are welcoming its music students for the second time following their debut in the 44th edition. Yehuda (drum), Carina (bass), Evelyn (keyboard), James (guitar) and three girls on vocal: Naomi, Ferren and Astrid are ready to make another cool appearance. These kids will be supported by their teachers in representing the jazzy side of Gita Bawana for the Braga Jazz Night #58.
Once again, the Braga Jazz Night #58 is coming on Thursday, 18 April 2019 at the Braga CityWalk, starting from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. It’s totally FREE and open for public. See you there!
