Gong Xi! Gong Xi! Happy Chinese New Year to all of you who celebrate it. Not only greetings, Jazzuality.com in cooperation with Aston Braga Hotel and Residence also held it very first event of Chinese New Year. Celebrating “Imlek” with unique way, we brought up our crew to Bandung Car Free Day, landing right on the center spot of pedestrians and cyclists heaven in Bandung. [flickr id=”8459903819″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium” group=”” align=”right”] Titled “Jazzin’ Car Free Day: A Chinese New Year Celebration”, we combined the atmosphere of Dago Car Free Day, Chinese New Year, Street Dance and also Jazz altogether. One package contains four different elements.
Supporting the Car Free Day in Bandung which already begun since April, 2008, Jazzuality tried to give unusual show with bringing Erick Gabe & the all-girls band Jazzy Juice to entertain people who take a walk along Dago street. It is common to see music event in Dago Car Free Day, but it becomes special when you can hear the vibes of genre firstly emerged in New Orleans over a century ago during the Car Free Day. Our associate Aston Braga Hotel and Residence gave its spot in front of Garda Oto (Jalan Dago no. 80) for the show.

The sun was shining at 7.30 am when three young girls showed up. 30 minutes was not enough for all-girls to present the beauty of Jazz. If you were there, you must be know what “all girls” meant. Exactly! There were Dyah Sekar [flickr id=”8459902969″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium” group=”” align=”left”](piano), Arnie Christanty (bass) and Adisty Zulkarnaen (drums) a.k.a Jazzy Juice, they greatly entertained the Sunday people on Dago Car Free Day. Dyah and Adisty even dressed up beautifully in Chinese traditional clothes, making their appearance even more special.
“Blue Rondo Ala Turk” from Dave Brubeck pop as the first song instantly catch everyone attention along the street. A song from Hiromi Uehara’s collection became the second songs from Jazzy Juice. It wasn’t easy to play, just as Hiromi’s typical compositions, yet they cooked it well. Both were delivered fully intense, energetic and perfectly executed. “Since it’s still morning, we think it’s perfect to bring these kinds of songs to you guys,” said Adisty to the crowds. Indeed it is.

“Sunday Morning Sun is Shining……” Of course, Erick Gabe really knew how to spoil the Sunday people with Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning” by changing the lyrics to fit the beautiful sunny weather during the show. Have you ever heard “Sik- Asik”, a hit of Ayu Ting Ting in Jazz version? You’re lucky one if you were at Dago Car Free Day on Sunday, February, 10, for Erick Gabe and Jazzy Juice rearranged this popular dangdut koplo song into swing version. Hundreds couple of eyes staring at them for more than 15 minutes.
[flickr id=”8459904441″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium” group=”” align=”right”] After singing along in the first session, our MC, Bintang S Tania called Riandy Kurniawan, founder of Jazzuality for interview session. “This is rare in Indonesia, probably in the world too.” said our own founder, Riandy Kurniawan. “We tried to make a new breakthrough by combining three different elements to make something new and unique, based on the spirit of friendship, peace, tolerance and living in harmony.” he added. “In the end we hope we’re able to show that Jazz can always welcome any styles, bridge the cultural gaps and prove its existance the kind of music with the spirit of openness and tolerance.” In the middle event, Garda Otto also gave 3 gooddie bags for 3 lucky person who could answered easy questions.
The live band continued, let’s back to the spot. Any who missed Chrisye’s hits? It was “Anak Jalanan” as the third song from Erick Gabe and Jazzy Juice. With a swingin’ rhyhtm, they finished the first session amusingly.

[flickr id=”8459903225″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium” group=”” align=”left”] Next, it’s time to move your body! There were set of dancers of Rhytmology, an affiliate of Bandung Street Dance Community (BDSC, a division of The Infinity Co) approached the street. They did carry out unpredictable show. A big drum which usually featured in Lion Dance accompanied them in front, and the ladies played a famous song from Herbie Hancock, “Cantaloupe Island”. This act attracted many passers-by to stop and joined the already crowded surroundings. If it was already unique, it became even more manic when Tian Ma Barongsai Lion Dance jumped in and gave one hell of a show. As one of Chinese New Year’s features, the Barongsai Lion started to take place in the center spot. Set of dancers plus the Lion, a big drum in the middle of circling crowds, accompanied by hard boppin’ Cantaloupe Island by Jazzy Juice marked a historical moment in the entertainment scene.

Next stop, Erick then came towards the ladies and sang the Ambonese delight, “Rame-Rame”. The dancers and Lion jammed and teased one another in jolly free jam. Such an interesting performance, around 15 minutes all of us was mesmerized by the performance of Barongsai, BSDC dancers along with Erick [flickr id=”8461001812″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium” group=”” align=”right”] Gabe and Jazzy Juice. A combination of jazz, street dance, and Barongsai perhaps become very luxurious art besides it was held on street event like Dago Car Free Day. Amazing, how creativity brings us into a new species of arts. We feel happy that we all did it.
The “Jazzin’ Car Free Day: A Chinese New Year Celebration” still ran after the music from Erick Gabe feat. Jazzy Juice. We moved to another pleasure. It was fun because there’s a cooking demo besides the band show. After thirty minutes with yummy and healthy food, there’s a calling for the winner of free invitation for February, 14th Romantic dinner at Aston Braga Hotel. Congaratulation for all winners!

Was it the end? Not really. Last show presented by dance crews, Infinity Ravers featuring Bandung Shuffle. Interestingly they brought the Rave culture form Australia. Again this act attracted many people to sit, stand and watch their performance. One by one or forming pairs, these kids showed their flexibility and fancy feet groove. After the cool battle session from all dancers, Jazzin’ Car Free Day reached the end, just a couple of minutes before the street got cleared to let cars and motorcycles passed through it again.
For the very first time we penetrated the jolly pedestrians and cyclists at the Car Free Day with one unique show. As one of the performances along the street today, we managed to bring one new concept by rolling four elements into one package. Jazz is dynamic and progressive, it’s also a music form that’s [flickr id=”8459903105″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium” group=”” align=”right”] always open to whatever style, culture and art. We hope this kind of combination can inspire more people to make something new, and of course, provide another way of entertainment too in the name of jazz.
Hopefully the new year will bring prosperity, blessings, and happiness for all of us. Thank you all performers, sponsors, supporters, soundmen and the crowds, for we wouldn’t be able to make this work without you guys. Last but not least, as we also have another special day to celebrate, the Valentine’s Day, we’d like to invite you come to our next event on February, 14th, “Romantic Jazz Dinner, In Love with today’s Hits” featuring Imelda Rosalin Trio and Erick Gabe at Aston Braga Hotel & Residence Bandung.
