December is a special month for Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Playhouse). After the previous three years with World Music Festival, this year we’re having World Music Festival IV, right in the closing year of 2009. Just like before, this year’s schedule looks pretty as well. Celebrating the world music in the spirit of peace, unity and togetherness, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta is presenting some of the best artists who really know how to deliver something special to celebrate this occasion.

The World Music Festival IV featuring:

Yovie Widianto Fusion (YWF Band)
Yovie Widianto Fusion (YWF Band) is the rebirth of keyboardist/pianist Yovie Widianto as a superb jazz fusion player, his roots and passion from the beginning of his career. It’s always great to see this band delivering endurance, strength, spirit and skill in front of the audience. Yovie brilliantly brought amazing talents to support this band with him, including Gerry Herb (drums), Adi Dharmawan (bass), Kadek Rihardika (guitar), D. Bambang P (keyboard/efx), Yoyok (tenor sax), Iwan Wiradz (percussion), Unique (layer fox).

Admission fee: IDR 100.000 and IDR 75.000 (balcony)

Balawan & Batuan Ethnic Fusion

Balawan is not just a guitarist, he’s more like a wizard. I Wayan Balawan, the complete name of Balawan came from Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. Grew up around the Balinese gamelan music, he began his journey by learning guitar as early as 8 years of age, and started his own band when he was still 14 year old. Balawan went to Sydney to study at the Australian Institute of Music under scolarship, then he formed Batuan Ethnic Fusion right away when he returned to his homeland. This is a very interesting band where Balawan combines Balinese gamelan music with western music including jazz.

His special “Touch Tapping Style” signature differ him than other guitarist around. This is a style with eight finger plays altogether to tap the fretboard, covering all the bass, chord and melody at the same time. This group has also introduced the Orkestra Seruling Bambu (Bamboo Flute Orchestra) as its concept, besides focusing on ethnical concept as their main element.
