The 32nd JGTC Pre-Event: Jazz Clinic at Pisa Café & Resto Mahakam

The 32nd JGTC Pre-Event: Jazz Clinic at Pisa Café & Resto Mahakam

For the second time Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC) held a Jazz Clinic at Pisa Café & Resto Mahakam. It was a very comfy place that’s really perfect to enjoy jazz. It became even better since the clinicians were all jazz greats of Inodnesia. There was Riza Arshad, the keyboardist with amazing skill from SimakDialog. Then Barry Likumahuwa, a very talented young bassist that goes really popular nowadays, who recently got the shot to play with Victor Wooten when he came to Indonesia last month. Then we got Oele Pattiselano, the legendary jazz guitarist, who once made a very remarkable album entitled TALK in 2000 together with Riza Arshad. Last but not least, there was also Sandy Winarta, a young drummer with superb skill who is very busy playing everywhere this year. If you looked at the list of clinicians, you’d know that it would surely be a big loss to miss the chance to be educated by some of the best jazz musicians. The MC was a senior music reviewer and observer, Dennie Sakrie.

The Clinic went on very well, so well that it was like attending to a talk show. Denny Sakrie has successfully managed to break the ice, making the bridge between the audience and clinicians. He threw a lot of jokes that responded very well by the clinicians, and that made the room became so alive and warm. Many questions came from the seats, and the clinicians looked very happy with the questions. I’d say the 32nd JGTC Jazz Clinic went very successful.

Besides sharing their experiences, the clinicians were also performed together. They played swing, funk and also ballad. They invited two sons of Glenn Dauna, Indra Dauna and Rega Dauna to play trumpet and harmonica. Together they played the smooth breezing “Samba Do Aviao” (Sound of the Jet), then continued with the classic Fly Me To The Moon.

At the jam session, Denny Sakrie and Riza Arshad said that they were both amazed with the talents of the saxophonist and Ian, the keyboardist that played with them on stage. Ian also appeared a day before playing at JGTC Roadshow at Margo Friday Jazz. Riza Arshad stated that these two musicians would surely shine in the near future if they continue their career as musicians.

In the end, “Suddenly September” and some Herbie Hancock’s repertoires closed this year’s  Jazz Clinic. All I can say is this: the 32nd JGTC was a huge success! I can’t wait to see the JGTC main event next week, on November 29, 2009. Don’t Miss It!
