Sunday Jazz @ Plate for Me II

Last month the regular jazz event in Bandung, Sunday Jazz was reloaded again at the new hangout place, Plate For Me (Palletes of Flavor). 5 groups did their jobs very well plus a surprising guest star Syaharani and Tulus who did a nice duet. New place, new atmosphere, new ambience. It was great to see this event from local jazz community KlabJazz has returned in style. We couldn’t wait to see who will take part in the second edition, and now the rooster’s confirmed! Two groups from Jakarta plus three from Bandung region will merry the Sunday Jazz @ Plate For Me II which will come no longer than next Sunday, April 29, 2012.

It’s time to check out the lineup for this second edition. First, let’s see two groups from Jakarta, Senar Tiga and Nona Ria TrioSenar Tiga is a big ensemble consists of potential boys and girls trained and coached by the real life/stage couple, Yance Manusama and Otti Jamalus. Having shaped by these two highly experienced senior jazz artists makes them ready to enter the real circuit in young age. With Senar Tiga you will feel the combination of Yance’s funky dose with Otti’s standard and pop jazz approach all in one. For this event Senar Tiga will be represented by 12 youngsters plus the coach Otti Jamalus and Yance Manusama plus their compatriote drummer Dezka Anugrah Samudra. This crowded group will definitely bring one cool jazz party.

Since this month we celebrated Kartini Day (April 21st) to honor R.A Kartini; a female heroine who fought for the equal right for females to get proper education in her life time; it’s perfect to enjoy a new trio with all female members named Nona Ria Trio in this edition. Said to bring pop and swing jazz in their repertoires, this group consists of the lady with fine jazz/scat singing Nesia Ardi, Rieke Astari (accordeon) and Nanin Wardhani (piano). Nesia has been participating in Sunday Jazz several times and recently supporting Shadow Puppets quite often. Here’s the chance to enjoy her thick jazz vocal again in her new own group.

Three bands from Bandung are completing the lineup. If you wonder how good teenagers can go jazzin, Fifteen Plus is for you. They have started the journey since 2009 and landed on many prestigious spots while their skill and teamwork grow towards the right path. Winning Jazz Goes to Campus competition in 2010 was one of their finest achievements. They also had their solo concert as a part of Saung Jazz two monthly event last year (read our coverage from that event here). Other than being unique by featuring female violist Miranti Fitri Khairunissa, the steady rhythm by Hizkia Natanael’s bass and Geby Christian’s drums highlighted by entertaining percussive rhytmical pattern by Adya Divara, let’s not forget the role of all-round pianist who’s riped in such a young age, Yonathan Godjali. Soon he will leave Indonesia to pursue his education at the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston, US, so before he goes, we are given another shot to enjoy them as one team. The magical aspects of jazz like improvisations, melodic explorations, surprising twists and turns as well as cool solo run are often appear within their performance. These will make you forget the fact that they are all still young.

Came from the  Espose 2012 Band Auditions, one of the winners Jamithology stands as one of the band in this month’s lineup. At the auditions they served a nice texture of electro-coustic soulful groove in solid teamwork. The sweet vocal of Giulana Puti, nice rhythm by cajon player Maendra, essential bass touch by Yehezkiel and some Spanish and groove feels by the guitar players granted them a shot at the main event of Espose, scheduled to come this Saturday, April 28. (Click here if you want to see the lineup and every other infos of Espose 2012 here). Just a day after that they are going to join the Sunday Jazz, so just in case you don’t go to Espose but love to hear easy listening soulful groove in light acoustic, make sure you’ll be there.

Last but not least, a long time member of KlabJazz who have been out of the stage for quite a long time Sonny Akbar is making his return under Sonny Akbar Trio. Besides himself on keyboard, he brings his usual partners in crime including Gallang Perdhana Dalimunthe (bass) and Edward Manurung (drums). As how he loved to bring complex post bop pattern during his active days several years ago, this time he will bring all the joy back again.

Pop jazz, funky groove, swing to post bop and so much more is coming your way this Sunday. As usual, Sunday Jazz is brought to you by KlabJazz and the venue Plate for Me, free of charge. You can enjoy the delicious meals and assorted drinks while having yourself entertained with live jazz for straight 4 hours at least. Come and join us!
