Shanghai Blue 1920 : Contemporary Jazz Night
Contemporary Jazz Night:
A tribute to the astonishing legends, Coltrane, Miles Davis and Chick Corea
Another interesting event is coming at the classy and stylish Shanghai Blue 1920 Jazz Club & Restaurant. Bringing the theme Contemporary Jazz Night, this time they are going to present a tribute to the astonishing legends such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Chick Corea.
On Coltrane
Merely mention the name John Coltrane and you’re likely to evoke a deeply emotional, often spiritual response from even the most casual jazz fan. The influence Coltrane has had on music spans many different genres and musicians. Coltrane’s massive influence on jazz, both mainstream and avant-garde, began during his lifetime and continued to grow after his death. He is one of the most dominant influences on post-1960 jazz saxophonists and has inspired an entire generation of jazz musicians. In 1965, he was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame. In 1972, A Love Supreme was certified gold by the RIAA for selling over half a million copies in Japan. This album, as well as My Favorite Things, was certified gold in the United States in 2001. In 1982 Coltrane was awarded a posthumous Grammy for “Best Jazz Solo Performance” on the album Bye Bye Blackbird, and in 1997, was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
On Miles Davis
Miles Davis is one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in the history of jazz music. He has been described as “one of the great innovators in jazz”. The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll noted “Miles Davis played a crucial and inevitably controversial role in every major development in jazz since the mid-’40s, and no other jazz musician has had so
profound an effect on rock. Miles Davis was the most widely recognized jazz musician of his era, an outspoken social critic and an arbiter of style – in attitude and fashion – as well as music”. His album Kind of Blue is the best-selling album in the history of jazz music and was praised by the United States House of Representatives to “pass a symbolic resolution honoring the masterpiece and reaffirming jazz as a national treasure.”
On Chick Corea
Considering the staggering volume of his recorded output over the past 40 years, it is no overstatement to call Chick Corea one of the most prolific composers of the second half of the 20th century. From avant-garde to bebop, from children’s songs to straight-ahead, from hard-hitting fusion to heady forays into classical, Corea has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is simply uncanny.
The tribute will surely be great in the hands of great musicians under Nita Aartsen Project. Featuring:
