He’s calm and doesn’t talk much. On stage he’s fully concentrated with his play, often with serious expression. That’s how this man is while performing. What he gives is a delicate jazz taste. Using guitar as his weapon, he brings out rushing jazz streams in lovely spontaneity. He can make it look so simple, but don’t be fooled, because what he gives is high quality jazz twists that uniquely can reach the heart of wide listeners, even those who are not into jazz at all. This very talented young man’s name is Johanes Radianto.
As Goethe Institut Jakarta continues its program Serambi Jazz for another round, Johanes Radianto will start it up this month by presenting his newly formed group Johanes Radianto Trio. Joining Johanes are Elfa Zulham (drums) and Kevin Yosua (bass). This group of three could be new, but the members have been familiar to one another for quite some times. They have played and gained experience together in many occasion, especially Johanes and Elfa who stand as the personnels of The Jongens Quartet. Kevin Yosua is one of the rising jazz bassists in Indonesia. Often plays as a sideman, he’s also settled in some bands, for example the avant-electrocoustic group Notturno. Looking at the combination, this is the kind of group that can create magic in one shot of performance.
Let’s take a closer look at the leader, Johanes Radianto. He was born in Semarang then got his first touch on guitar when he was still at a tender age, 12 years old. Having a folk guitar from his parents, he studied all by himself, absorbing lessons from his dad, friends and uncles. From that moment he started to explore his instrument, all the way until he got the chance to pursue his master degree in Jazz Studies in Guitar Performance in Den Haag, Netherlands. He graduated from Prins Claus Conservatory in 2007 and Koninklijk Conservatorium in 2009 in Denhaag. His decision to return to his homeland seems to be the right decision, because he directly got many chances to proof his ability. In just a short time he has graced many jazz events, from the small ones all the way to big festivals. Other than carrying his role as an active jazz musician he also teaches in Ponpin Music School and Institut Musik Indonesia (IMI).
We have been familiar with his mastery skill based on watching his performances for many times, either in his established groups or while he’s jamming with other cats. So what’s new for this time? It could be many things, but here’s what he’s promised for his Serambi Jazz session: he will bring all of his journeys and memories to the stage. If you know how important high quality means in any of Serambi Jazz program, you will know that this one will go towards that level as well. Johanes is one of the most superb traditional jazz guitarists coming from the newer generation. He’s young, but he’s capable in delivering the trad jazz with touches of modernity. The trio has prepared their own compositions to go along with other repertoirs listed for this show. With this, Johanes, Elfa and Kevin are more than ready to share their happiness to you. If you want to feel it, just come to Serambi Jazz next Thursday, February 21, 2013. The show will start at 7:30 pm sharp, don’t be late as the seat is limited and have a jazzy good time!
