JAZZYLICIOUS : The Lineups
Music is a parallel language, that need no explanation, but certainly need to be interpreted. Today we are still facing the same problem, the lack of appreciation for jazz, especially in Indonesia, the same problem as classical music. Some people take jazz as a music genre that’s too heavy, abstract and difficult to listen. Besides that, jazz has its own stereotype as the music of elite. To make it worse, many among the younger generation think jazz as the music for oldies, boring and old fashioned.
With all these missinterpretations, Rookie Production feels the urge to prove that jazz actually can be enjoyed by all segments. Jazz has proven itself as an open genre that is always welcome for any other musical genres to blend in together. Time and time again we witness the interaction between jazz and other genres, and often these kinds of “marriage” create new form of musics, and always beneficial for both jazz or other styles of music.
This July, Rookie Production presents JAZZYLICIOUS. This is a unique jazz event that we’re sure will accomodate the music style of youngsters. Holding the tagline: “Not So Jazz As You Thought So”, they have a very important mission to re-introduce jazz to fit the younger segments of music lovers. Jazz, which for some people told as “segmented music” will appear as “enjoyable music”, not only for youngsters but also for all ages in various different type of listeners. What’s good about this, the event will be held outside Jakarta. The flower city, the city of mode and creativity, Bandung, located at West Java Indonesia is a brilliant choice.
Jazzylicious is an event which will collaborate many dynamic music style into one, such as pop, chillout, nu jazz, funk, R&B, soul, hip hop, swing, bossa nova and many more. These many form of musics will be packed altogether in one top class event, unique and affordable. All the lineups were selected very carefully by Roekie Production, also the choosen location that will definately help to create the Jazz Lounge concept. These all are the important consideration to make a spectacular music event.
Now, let’s see the lineups. In Jazzylicous you will see the performance of top class band/musicians in Indonesia today: MALIQ & D’ESSENTIALS, SORE and ANDEZZZ. Not only these big names, the event will also has PALM FROM MOODYTUNES, CHALK FOR CHEESE AND SIKUAI as the opening.
MALIQ & D’ESSENTIALS

Maliq & d’Essentials has just celebrating their 7th birthday last May 15. This is a band that lead the modern acid jazz movement in Indonesia today. The name MALIQ is an abbreviation of Music and Live Instrument Quality, and got its concept from the creative mind of Angga, Widi (producer, composer, arranger and song writer) and also Indra Sulisto, the excecutive producer and manager back then. They started their career performing in many cafe and lounge like Jamz, The Bar Four Seasons Hotel, Mana Lounge and many other places for 2 years. And then, when they released their first album, they reached the top instantly.
Besides Angga (vocal) and Widi (drums), the other personnels, or known as d’Essentials consist of Indah (vocal), Jawa (bass), Ifa (keyboard), Amar (trumpet) and Lale (guitar). In their hand, jazz would never be the same anymore. It’s a modern soulful jazz, groovy and funky that will surely be loved by the younger generation of music lovers out there. Very ear catchy and easy to enjoy even for those who doesn’t really into jazz. As they are preparing to have their moment on Jakarta International Java Soulnation Festival 2009, it will be interesting to see what they are going to offer at the Jazzylicious. As all the previous experience watching MALIQ & D’ESSENTIALS, we are sure to have a blasting night at the event! Just free your mind, let the funk flow.

SORE

SORE is a very unique Jakarta based indie band that is always hard to place into one particular genre. Their creativity is limitless, creating a new level of music with their signature. Taking their name from a part of day, sore (in English means late afternoon), as the part of day they think is best to relax by enjoying the music. Their music texture is different than what you’ve ever listened, and is surely difficult to compare with any other bands around. It’s a pop music with absaurd-electic touch, which got influenced by a wide range of big names, from The Beatles, Morrissey, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Interpol, Gino Vannelli, Antonio Carlos “Tom” Jobim, Burt Bacharach, Masaru Satoh, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Procol Harum, America, Paul Simon, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Ludwig van Beethoven, Krzysztof Komeda, Michael Franks, Keenan Nasution, Yockie Suryoprayogo, to Gil Evans. What they describe themselves is this: “Imagine the Beatles grew up living in the Pacific, listening to the music of Steely Dan, Morrisey, Interpol, Antonio Carlos Jobim and some obscure Indonesiana of the 1970’s. “
Their first album, “Centralismo” achieved great response from everywhere. The Time Magazine Asia claimed this one as “One of Five Asian Albums Worth Buying”, and from Rolling Stone Indonesia Magazine it’s listed as number 40 in “150 Greatest Indonesian Albums of All Time”. Their second album which was released about a year ago received a great acclaim as well. The Rolling Stone Indonesia voted it as The Best Album of 2008.
Indie rock, indonesia rock revival, psychadelic, collage rock, chamber pop, some nuance of movie soundtrack with touch of many kinds of jazz, including latin, are textured as one, creating a very unique music style courtesy of SORE. Their nuance of vintage style of music create a reminiscence of the sound of 50’s-70’s, yet surprisingly it feels new. If you’re looking for a creative band, SORE is definately worth to check!
SORE are:
Awan Garnida (bass, vocal), Ade Firza Paloh (guitar, vocal), Gusti Pramudya (drums, vocal), Reza Dwiputranto (guitar, vocal), Mondo Gascaro (piano, keyboard, vocal), Dono Firman (keyboard, synthesizer)

ANDEZZZ

We should be proud for having a multi-talented musician who graduated from Berklee College of Music, Boston, majoring in Jazz Compositions. Edward Fernandez, better known as Andezzz was half of SOVA before he decided to continue his journey in solo career. He’s a bassist, song writer, producer, arranger and also widely popular as an awesome DJ. When he was still in SOVA, together with the other half Lawrence “Larry” Aswin (recently joined Humania) they have set the trend for the cool chillout Nu Jazz in Indonesia. Through 2 Albums and 2 EPs, they successfully fused soul, funk, even Brazilian inside a delicious electronic texture, adding the new flavor of modernized nu jazz into the Indonesian music scene.
Parting apart, Andezzz continued his path by forming [Departure:People] and marked his glorious debut with his first album “Movin’ On”. Soulful house music in broken beat, including some smooth jazzy sounds were the formula that made this album acceptable for different segments of music lovers. If Japan has many DJs who really base themselves in jazz like Kyoto Jazz Massive’s DJ Shuya Okino and his brother DJ Yoshihiro Okino, DJ Ryota Nozaki of Jazztronik, DJ TAkeshi Hanzawa of FREETempo to say the least, we should be thankful for having Andezzz who really know how to cook the soulful house music by having jazz as the main ingredient. Watch out for Andezzz in Jazzylicious, because he’s bringing his DJ’AZZ Set!

In the tradition of Maysa, Ledisi, Oleta Adams and other soulful jazz voices lies the texture of Grace Caroline Sahertian’s voice. This is a band that could never be tired to listen. Besides Grace, the band consists of Ferry a.k.a “Gembong” (backing vocal), Athfand Denada Harahap (guitar), Bayu Kristianto (keyboard), Sindhu Bayusekti (bass), Harry Haryansyah (drums) and Ferdy Apriyadi (sax).
Chalk 4 Cheese

Tagged as “the new nu jazz/groove band in the block”, Chalk for Cheese is a group that will grease the Indonesian groove music in the near future. This group is always enjoyable whenever we watch them. Barry Likumahuwa gave his compliment on this band personally when they met each other performing at Kampoeng Jazz Festival 2009 two months ago. Their soulful groove music style surely can be acceptable by wider segments even to the youngsters as well. Their beat shuffle, soul and groove with acoustic guitar plus the unique vocal of Trianzani Sulshi are the main ingredients that you all will love. What’s good about Chalk For Cheese is that they have their own original songs such as “Bercerita Jingga”, “Kala Hari”, and “Sukmaku” Other than Trianzani Sulshi, there are Iman (bass), Ferry Nurhayat a.k.a “Gembong” (keyboard), Ferdy Apriady (sax) and Arif Rahman (Drums).
“sound of scraped chalk, ask you to put your hands to cover your ears, then you have your own world, tastes like melted cheese touches your tongue, make you sing along in your own world, nevermind..” – chalk for cheese
