Jazz Legacy 3 : The Series, the Upcoming Jazz Event in Surabaya
Following the success of Jazz Night 1 (December 2008) and Jazz Night 2 (March 2009), now the third edition is coming. Using the title Jazz Legacy 3 : The Series, this third instalment features Yason A Gunawan (piano) and Benny Chen (drums) just like the previous series. They will perform together with two guest musicians Simon Tan (bass) from Philippines and Tots Tolentino (sax) from USA. The lineups doesn’t stop there, because Jazz Legacy 3 also features some finest local artists from Surabaya: Dyan Alvin and Krisna Setiawan (piano), Rio (bass), Thya Anhar, Benny Kartono and Eryka (vocal). Many jazz lovers in Surabaya have wished for jazz events to take place in their hometown. Well guys, now you have it. Based on what we saw on the first two series, we are really sure that this series will be able to make Surabaya as the home of jazz again like how it used to be in the past.
Let’s check some profiles of the performers.
Benny Chen
Benny Chen is the son of the living legend, maestro Bubi Chen, one of the finest pianist in Asia as well as in the world. Benny follows the footsteps of his father as a jazz musician, but he takes drums as his weapon. He’s very well known among the educators and music practicians. He started his music path by learning classical piano for 6 years, and later switched to drums by learning from Ian Hay when he was 12 year old. He’s been very good in analyzing music from the beginning. That fact brought him as the jury in some Music Contest even before his age reached 17.
Benny Chen decided to focus on jazz in 1993 by appearing together with his father in many jazz events. He also learned from many world class drummers such as Tony Buck, Professor Gary France and Grant Collins, Billy Cobham and Ronald Shannon Jackson. Now he established C & G Project (Chen and Gunawan Project) together with Yason Gunawan, a duo that hopefully will contribute a lot to jazz development in Indonesia.
Yason Gunawan
Yason graduated from Royal Conservatory of Music and Jazz Performance in Capilano College, Vancouver, Canada, majoring Commercial Music. He has performed in many big events such as Vancouver Jazz Festival, Langley Music Festival and Nelson Music Festival to name a view. He has also appeared together with world class musicians like Jimmy Heath, Phil Nimmons, Regina Carter and many more. Besides active in lecturing, he still continues learning with the maestro Bubi Chen. Now in C & G Project, we sincerely hope this rising star would give something to bring Surabaya as one of the top jazz cities in Indonesia back again.
Tots Tolentino
Tots Tolentino decided to be a saxophonist at the age of 16 inspired by Charlie Parker. He learned flute under the guidance of Professor Eric Barcelo in the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Philippines for 2 years. He continued his study focusing in saxophone at Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts with Joseph Viola and honored as Magna Cum Laude. Tolentino has released 3 albums: “Tots Tolentino”, “Inah” and “Color Real”. His great saxophone playing got the Japanese trumpetist Terumasa Hino’s attention, who asked him to join Asian Jazz Allstars. The group has toured around Asia and USA. He is currently active in the Asian jazz circuit. Without a doubt, Tots Tolentino is one of the best saxophonist in Asia today.
Simon Tan
Simon Tan is a prolific bassist from Philippines. He started by learning classical guitar at the age of 13 at Yamaha School of Music before moving to electric bass. He learned contrabass at the College Music, University of Philippines until 1992, and now builds his career by using all kinds of bass in various music genres. Pioneering Lampano Alley, a Philippines blues band led by Binky Lampano and establishing the award winning jazz group WDOUJI have become his remarkable achievements. Today he has emerged as a prime choice for almost every jazz concert around South East Asia.
