How often do we have a jazz event presented on the mountain? A very interesting jazz event is coming at a very unique location. This time a jazz event entitled Jazz Gunung (Mountain Jazz) will take place on Tengger Mountain, at Java Banana Bromo to be exact. The tagline says everything about the event. “Cool Music, Fresh Air”, or as we see on the poster, in Indonesian they use “Lebih Asyik, Lebih Segar”.

This is an event that doesn’t happen often. As far as we know, this is the first time a concert to take place on a mountain, on 2000 meters high (about 6500 feet). Clear blue sky, cool weather usually around 14 degree Celcius (57 degree Fahrenheit) will be perfect to have a harmonious collaboration between beautiful music composition and the nature’s beauty. Java Banana Bromo is a site with an astounding sight, a perfect place to see the real beauty of the nature. It’s always stunning to see the sunrise and sunset from this location, and this time it’s going to be even better. What could be better than watching the sunset with jazz? Seriously, this is something that you should not miss.

For this edition, Jazz Gunung (Mountain Jazz) features Kua Etnika, an open-minded, creative  group/community that presents ethnical music with modern approach. They have started 14 years ago, formed by three great Indonesian artiste Djaduk Ferianto, Butet Kartaredjasa and Purwanto. Kua Etnika is a melting pot of many forms of art: from musicians, poets, theatrical artists and so on. Heavily inspired with Javanese and Balinese backgrounds, Kua Etnika is like a path bridging the gap between traditional art and modern art, between “free, idealistic exploration” and “pragmatic industrial exploration”. Bringing the ethnical music, art and culture to fit into the modern day, that’s what I would say about this very interesting group. To make it better, Trie Utami, one of the senior female vocalist who has been successfully build her career in between jazz and ethnical for many years is going to be there as well. Trie Utami is known as a complete vocalist who can sing in the Javanese traditional style perfectly, and it will surely be wonderful to see her collaboration with the stunning Kua Etnika.

Jazz Gunung is coming very soon, on July 25, 2009. The event is going to start at 2:00 PM (Western Indonesia Standard Time) by traditional art performance and close with a familiar dinner for all the musicians and guests. Hopefully this first installment of a brilliant idea to combine the beautiful scenery of the nature with jazz will be continued on different mountains like Merapi, Dieng and so on.
