What a night! A celebration of big band happened at ITB (Institute of Technology Bandung) on a rainy Saturday night, November 15th, 2008. Five big bands performed on stage swinging the night away. Big Band Waditra Ganesha, ELBE Jazz Big Band, Galaxy Big Band, Van Alloy Big Band, Salamander Big Band, plus an amazing performance by Margie Segers ft Salamander Big Band. All bands gave out their best and I can say, what a pleasant night it was! Whether you like swing and the glorious big band or not, all songs they played were just wonderful. The room was full with more than 400 audience.  Apparently the rain wasn’t enough to stop the jazz lovers to watch this great concert.

It was a successful night for ITB as a result. Many swing standard songs appeared on stage. Stompin’ At Savoy, Lullaby of Birdland, In The Mood, All The Things You Are, Honeysuckle Rose, Fever, and many more were presented in big band style, just like the way they were presented in the 30’s.

Salamander Big Band

A fantastic performance by the legendary Margie Segers ft Salamander Big Band closing the concert. What a really great main event it was. Fully charm and very interactive performance gave her a standing applause by the audience, especially when the extra song, Norah JonesDon’t Know Why, sung in a very sweet and beautiful way. It was even better than Norah’s version. Margie showed how the real jazz should be delivered. The improvisation was simply unbelievable. It’s not a made up improvisation at all, but pure, simple and always right on the spot. Respect for Margie!

Margie Segers’ amazing performance

It was amazing to see that there were many people enjoying glorious music of big bands. And it was a wonderful surprise to see that actually youngsters could also understand the music and enjoying it. Too bad some overreacting acts were shown by some of the organizers that didn’t understand the mutual relationship between them and the medias. Still, overall, it was a great concert. 5 big bands, one legendary jazz lady, 400 satisfied audience. It was a success. Thank you ITB. Let’s hope there will be more jazz events come from you in the future.
