The 32nd JGTC Olivia Ong’s Intimate Performance and Balawan Wrapped Up The Event
Olivia Ong was on stage as the second last performers at the 32nd Jazz Goes to Campus 2009. Being the only star sensation from Singapore that went exclusively to Japan, she achieved her popularity around Asia. She was one of the special performers that many audiences had been waiting for. Her beauty, her charm and lovely voice hypnotized the audiences from start to finish. She brought some of the songs she covered in “A Girl Meets Bossanova” series and also some more songs taken from her other albums such as “Fly Me To The Moon”, “L-O-V-E”, “I’ll Move On” and many more. A truly sweet as candy performance was just perfect to fill up the cold rainy night at JGTC.
The final band to appear was Balawan Quartet featuring some famous stars. It was a showcase of skill, as Balawan showed how he became one of the most complete guitarist in Indonesia, probably in the world. Shadu Rasjidi, the son of the legendary Idang Rasjidi was on stage, also Didit Violin, Ireng Maulana and Barry Likumahuwa.
With Balawan session, this year’s JGTC reached the end. Cool fireworks officially closed the event. For us, the 32nd JGTC was indeed a rejuvenation. All the artists that performed from 10 AM to midnight were just fantastic and suited perfectly to the youngsters. Rainbow-like different genres, from fusion, bossa, post bop, funk, acoustic, to the modern acid soulful style were all delivered in one event, showing how jazz could merge harmoniously with just about any kind of musics. We saw many enthusiastic music lovers that stayed until the end. In the end, we congratulate the organizers from the Faculty of Economics Universitas Indonesia (FE-UI) for all their hard works and efforts to make this event went on successfully. As one of the oldest big event in the world, second to North Sea Jazz Festival, we hope to see this event keep going strong year after year. It was a full day of jazz, not even rain could stop it, and it was delivered with the spirit of rejuvenation. Congratulation once again, and see you at next year’s JGTC!
