The Road trip has started. The first stop of the 32nd Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC) was in Yogyakarta. It was held at D3 Economy Faculty of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FE-UGM) Yogyakarta. This event was made by the organizers from Economy Faculty of Universitas Indonesia Jakarta (FE-UI) as the pre-event before the main JGTC event that will happen on November 29, 2009. It started at 2:00 PM with a band named Economic Session Band (ESB) from FE-UGM. They brought 3 songs such as “Earth Song”, “Unholy Confession” and “Kangen”.

The audience started to fill up the venue when the second band, Mid Season started to perform. They brought 3 instrumental songs that suggested us to dance. The lovely “La Fiesta”, then a traditional West Javanese folk song “Tokecang” that was re-arranged to medium swing beat.

The next band was Sketsa Band, with Gerald Situmorang (guitar) and Arman (drums) plus two Jogja based musicians: Andy Gomez (keyboard) and Yoga (electric bass). Together they played 4 jazz standard songs incluiding “Straight No Chaser”, “Blue Bossa”, “All The Things You Are” and “Mr PC”. They played really well, but sadly they didn’t get enough appreciation from the audience who mostly consisted of university students.

At 4 PM in the afternoon, the audience started to fill up the front row to see the unique duo Endah n Rhesa. This dynamic duo brought “I Don’t Remember” and “Remember Me” to start their session. The audience sang along when this couple brought two hits “When You Love Someone” and “Baby It’s You”. In the middle of their performance, Endah took time to promote their new released album “Nowhere To Go”. The fans could buy their CD for only IDR 25.000.

The next performer was Yovia Project from Jazz On The Street Yogyakarta. Yovia consisted of 3 bassists (Yoga, Victor and Indra) plus one drummer, Andri. They played Kool and the Gang’s “Get Down On It” and a folk song from Papua (New Guinea), “Yamko Rambe Yamko”. They delivered it in cheerful fusion. The show was closed by the performance of 21st Night. This band which produced by Widi and Angga “Maliq” brought their hits that the audience seemed to know so well.

Project Officer of the 32nd JGTC, Nacitta Kanyandara said that it was the very first time they made the roadshow outside Jakarta. They choose UGM as the venue, because they believe there are many students in UGM that have high appreciation in jazz. She hopes next year there will be more than a jazz event from JGTC to Yogyakarta. Adding workshop or clinic will be great, to bring jazz more closer to all the students in Yogyakarta.

The next stop will be in Bandung (November 18, 2009) and Jakarta (November 20, 2009). (Check out the full schedule and the lineups here). The countdown is on. Are you ready?
