August is a very special month in which Indonesia celebrates Ramadhan (the fasting month) and the independence day. Before we reach those events, this month was quickly opened in jazz by Sunday Jazz. Served as usual at the cozy Potluck Coffee Bar and Library which has become a perfect home of jazz and the fans, we got four cool groups presenting their styles in variety.

As we can see from the previous months, Sunday jazz presented us a many dazzling jazz artists and groups both from Bandung and from the capital of Jakarta. Last month at Sunday Jazz July Edition we got Iman Brata Trio, Sonny Akbar Quartet, and Sandy Winarta, the versatile and one of the most wanted jazz drummer today in Indonesia with his band named Sandy Winarta Quartet. Klab Jazz and Potluck brought another 4 interesting groups this month to match the success of the previous one, featuring Pineapple, Tiwi Shakuhachi, Tulus, and Vassagie. Sunday Jazz was meant to be very special by the appearance of Tiwi Shakuhachi, a female pianist/accordion who can also sing as great. We believed she would bring magic on the Potluck’s jazzy stage, and yes she did. The beautiful Tiwi Shakuhachi is the fine blend of the Parahyangan Valley’s exosticism and the magical jazz improvisations. The last time we saw her was when she performed with the stylish guitar maestro Agam Hamzah at Jazz Break Revival XIX. So it was about time to have her again pouring her charm in Bandung. Beside Tiwi there were the new formed band TULUS, the combination of teachers-students of Venche Music School Pineapple and a band with various jazz colors, Vassagie. They were all ready to make our Sunday merrier with jazz.

To our surprise, Tiwi Shakuhachi started first. She brought a solid team as trio this time, including Rudy Zulkarnaen (bass) and Achmad “Opik” Taufik (drums). The perfect weather got an exotic bossa touch right away with “A Girl From Ipanema” as the first song. The next song turned to swing, taking on The Police‘s “Every Little Thing.” Tiwi and the rest of the trio still kept the reggae nuance contained in the song. A song written by Djavan and popularized by Flora Purim was next entitled “Jogral”. The afternoon went on lovelier with The Cure‘s “Friday I’m in Love” pinned in funky/groovy jazz. Tiwi brought more surprise with Incubus‘ “I Miss You” in medium swing. It was a really nice re-arrangement to make it sound just like the brand new song. Tiwi gave a little scat in this song as well. Sergio Mendes and Brasil 88‘s “Favela” was brought as an encore. Tiwi Shakuhachi Trio brought various candy-licious flavors to set this edition of Sunday Jazz. Her beautiful vocal, nice touch on piano backed with the skillful bassist and drummer made her appearance as something really special.

Vassagie took the stage. Vassagie is a band was formed 3 years ago with the personnel Aldi Nada Permana (piano), Jalu Rohanda (electric bass) and Herwin Parta (drums). They brought their own song, the funky “Ku Tahu Kau Ada” as their first one. They continued with Miles’ Davis “So What”. Cool exploration rising intensely appeared in this one. They went smoother with their other song “It Was You”. “Kulu-Kulu Blues” was their playground to show their tasty Javanese pentatonic flavor in groovy beat. Aldi had real fun in rambling his piano with the ethnical nuance over jazz chords and runs. Their last song was the funky blues song taken from Herbie Hancock‘s collection “Watermelon Man” and huge applauses were given to them as they ended their session.

TULUS was the third performing band for the afternoon. Led by Tulus, the vocalist of Sikuai, the new formed band featured Tesla Manaf Effendi (guitar) and Gega Nesywara (bass). Stevie Wonder‘s “Isn’t She Lovely” was the first song, surprisingly opened up in bop by Tesla. The song found its mark soon as Tulus started singing the song. The classic jazz songbook, Ellington/Russell‘s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” were brought smoothly next under a huge applause by the audience. “All Of Me” in the new smoother and slower version came next, followed by another classic, the evergreen “Summertime” brought in funky flavor. the last song was the most difficult song, taking on Charlie Parker‘s “Airmail Special”. This song was famous by Ella Fitzgerald‘s rendition and also by the phenomenal Nikki Yanofsky in 2007. Tulus gave a hot scatsinging in speeding bullet song. Tesla also gave a tremendous guitar play on this one. Huge pops of course came from the audience who quickly asked for more. TULUS gave a song we all know so well for the encore, Michael Buble‘s “Home”. It was nice to hear Tulus’ voice got better and better. A really promising group indeed, hopefully they keep going together.

The last group for this month’s Sunday Jazz was Pineapple. The name was taken from the name of the street where Venche Music School is located. This group consists of the combination between students and teachers of that school. Even while they did the soundcheck they already gave one song, “Just The Two Of Us” in instrumental. After a short break they gave the West Java’s traditional song “Manuk Dadali” in jazz version. Tremendous exploration was brought on this song. The groove fusion continued on with their own song filled with chunky guitar just like the 70′s style. A chilled song served almost in the tradition of smooth jazz were brought next. It was the song they wrote while feeling tired one night in Yogyakarta entitled “Hard Tired.” Sonny Susetyo joined them and brought “Autumn Leaves”. The next song, an original song which was still untitled was the end of their session as well as the August Edition of Sunday Jazz.

Pure satisfaction from the beginning until the end perhaps was the best way to describe Sunday Jazz August Edition at Potluck Coffee Bar and Library. Every performers did their parts really well. Even with the fact that some of the bands just had the chance to rehearsed only once or twice, or some even performed spontaneously, the quality jazz was again served on Potluck’s jazz stage. Thank you Klab Jazz, Potluck, all the performers and everyone behind this event. Keep up the good work and keep contributing for our jazz development. Can’t wait to see you again next month!

Jazz could appear in lots of forms and we can never able to describe them into words. That’s why it’s always interesting for us to see jazz events, since there will always be something new for us to see in each one. It’s great to see how Sunday Jazz keep moving on. Entering the month of August, the fifth Sunday Jazz served at Potluck Coffee Bar and Library will roll. Month after month we’ve seen different groups with different styles and formations poured their hearts on stage. Both locals and national artists joined hands together to bring our Sunday merrier with jazz. Potluck Coffee Bar and Library is a cozy place with delicious beverages and tasty foods, also provides library including a special jazz section in one corner. With the cooperation with Klab Jazz we have quality groups every months. The Sunday Jazz itself is growing nicely as we have seen more and more audiences who were not only came to eat but to enjoy the performances as well.

For this August edition, Sunday Jazz at Potluck V is featuring Tiwi Shakuhachi. The combination of the exoticism of Parahyangan Valley with the charm of jazz improvisations is something we always got through her gigs. We have seen that persona appeared at Jazz Break Revival XI and again at Jazz Break Revival XIX when she teamed up with the guitar maestro Agam Hamzah. Besides being known as a stylish pianist, Tiwi is also able to play accordeon just as great. It’s going to be wonderful to see her again performing at the cozy Potluck, this time bringing her team, Achmad Taufik and Taufik Fikeka both on drum and bass.

Not only Tiwi Shakuhachi, but there are three other groups will join her. Pineapple, the cool fusion group consists of the combination between the students and teachers of Ventje Music School (VMS) that was formed 5 years ago will be there. Vassagie, the jazz band from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) is back as well. And last but not least, we have a newly formed group named Tulus.

We always believe that a single picture can speak a thousand words. We’ve been in business for more than 2 years now, and as you can see, we always try to provide quality pictures along with the articles. That’s because we realize the importance of pictures to support our writings and how crucial it is for documentations. Through the lenses of photographers we could track the history back, making us able to imagine or feel the situation without having to be there in person. I always enjoy the photography collections of jazz from the past. There are many brilliant photos that have successfully captured some jazz golden moments before I was born, and I got to admit I learned a lot from looking at them. No matter how good you write an article, it will never be enough if you don’t have photos to support it.

Klab Jazz seems to have the same perspective. In every event they held, they always had at least one photographer with and they will continue to do so. One of the official photographer is Mia Damayanti Sjahir. This lovely lady has been consistantly and faithfully work with Klab Jazz in capturing the magic moments, and amazingly it’s all for free. We have been working side by side with her for almost two years now in many events from small sizes to big ones. she’s a great friend of ours, very energic, cheerful, full of spirit and always positive. She can always enlight the atmosphere with her presence anytime. Even with her busy activity as an event and wedding organizer, she still manage to follow her passion in the photography field. As a result, there are many great photos capturing the golden moments came from her camera. Some of these amazing photos can now be seen here at Potluck Coffee Bar and Library through a photography exhibition called “JAZZ | Poster and Post It”.

Potluck Coffee Bar and Library had just celebrated their fresh come back party after going under a renovation for some times. It was made big by featuring Shadow Puppet, Dira J Sugandi and many other cool performers. Not only fully back in service but they also decided to go back to their first concept, serving jazz as the main menu besides their tasty snacks and beverages. It was simply a good choice to bring Klab Jazz in collaboration. Soon after they established the connection we got regular jazz events called “Sunday Jazz” on the first week of each month. Sunday Jazz is not the only live jazz music at Potluck though, there are also Afternoon Jazz on every Wednesday and Thursday starting from 5:00 pm and Sunday Jazz Brunch, every Sunday starting from 11:00 am. If live jazz concerts are not enough, they also provide a special jazz corner in their library, again supported by Klab Jazz called “Klab Jazz Corner @ Potluck Library”. Now they even strengthen their concept by holding a photography exhibition which will be available for us to see for about a month. According to Lucille G Husaen, the General Manager of Potluck, this is the realization of their jazz concept. “Not only with stage performance, there are other things related to jazz that we should have.” she said. So here at Potluck we have several jazz-related things. Jazz performance, jazz library, jazz gallery and jazz gathering. “By having all these jazz stuffs provided here, all the jazz lovers would gathered together automatically.” she continued. And that’s really cool to know, since now we have a cozy place with strong jazz atmosphere to hang out.

It’s about time of course to have this jazz photography exhibition. We tend to think that jazz is all about music and the musicians, all about concerts or stage performances. We seems to forget the necessity of these photos that are actually able to “freeze” all the golden moments which we can pass to the next generations. This kind of event can remind us of how important it is to respect the “heroes” that use camera as their weapons. They are just as important as any other elements of jazz. As for Klab Jazz, besides it’s still relating to their mission, this is also a perfect time to return the favor to Mia after all her contributions to make this jazz community as colorful as it is today.

Mia’s works can already be listed in some categories. What we have at Potluck this time is focused on two areas, Stage Photography and Journalistic Photography. Maybe next time we can also see her works in Still Life and Essay Photography segments. The photos are presented in various sizes such as the poster size (A0 and A1), post-it (5 x 7.5 cm) and some standard 16Rs. The pictures are taken from various events from Jazz Break Revival series, Halaman Monthly Jazz, Ngayogjazz Festival, ITJazz, Jazz Goes to Campus to the prestigious international sized festival, the Java Jazz Festival.

Potluck looks even more colorful with these jazz photographies spread all over the place. It was even almost like searching for easter eggs, since some of the “post it” types with the size as small as a note you stick on the refrigerator were placed randomly everywhere. We saw “Indra Lesmana” in a glass vase on the rack right in front of the entrance, and a picture of JavaJazz’s poster when they held a concert at the Atmosphere Resto was placed right in front of the cashier. Many other small post-it sized pictures spread everywhere around the cafe. All these photographies can be enjoyed for a month, from July 11 to August 7, 2010.

To make the opening ceremony merrier, Klab Jazz and Potluck presented some bands and musicians to entertain the guests, including Fastcom, Hot Chocolate, Iman Rahman & Friends and Ryan V.

The opening ceremony was done by the curator of Klab Jazz Dwi Cahya Yuniman with Imelda Rosalin, Rudy Zulkarnaen and Arifandi Renaldi. Imelda expressed how she enjoyed the pictures all these time. “Artists can only be recognized by their works, and therefore I’d like to express my grattitude for all your works” she said to Mia. To Imelda, Mia and the rest of photographers have contributed a lot to provide a “silent” music through their pictures. We couldn’t agree more with her. Some musicians and the Klab Jazz community were also attended the ceremony including Imam Pras, Tesla, Ferry Nurhayat and many more.

Live performance started at 5 pm, started with Iman Rahman Trio. After some tunings on the instruments, they rolled the delicious groove from the stage. As we have reported several times, Iman Rahman Trio is a group that knows hot to blend groove with some ethnic touches here and there. Even with these blends, they still managed to make it easy to listen. As the leader, Iman also knows how to bring the bass more forward, and they gave a great groovin’ ethnic just like they used to.

After a break, a group named Fastcom came on stage. If before they appeared by trio at the last Jazz Break Revival edition, this time they appeared in quartet. Three personnels were still the same, Chirst Stanley (piano), Ilham Setia (bass) and Albert Shadrach (drums), but now they had Attar on guitar. They brought “Israel” for the first song, followed by 3 more songs including John coltrane’s song.

Ryan V was next. It’s a pop jazz group using the name of the vocalist, Ryan Valentinus. Featuring Fikri on percussions and Anugerah on piano, Ryan V is one of the group who played for Klab Jazz at their first attempt in Java Jazz Festival 2006. Ryan V was expressive in singing the song. By smartly brought Radiohead‘s “High and Dry” he quickly grabbed the attention of every attendances. The Killers‘ “Mr Brightside” was next, brilliantly mixed with “No One No Cry” in a very different style. Again the show a very creative re-arrangement on another Bob Marley classic, “Waiting in Vain”. After several other songs including their own song “Selalu Hadir Untukmu”, they brought “Leaving on the Jet Plane” in a bit darker version.

Ryan V wasn’t a new band. They have started several years ago in Jakarta, but now they made a fresh return in Bandung. “The enviroment and climate are just much better here to explore ourselves” Ryan said. Now they play regularly at Sobbers Bar and Resto in Bandung every Sunday Night. For you who like this cool band, just come and see them there.

Hot Chocolate was the last band to perform at Jazz | Poster and Post It. Consists of young personnels they gave groovy pop jazz to satisfy the crowds. With songs such as Dian PP‘s “Aku Ini Punya Siapa”, The Carpenters‘ “Close to You” Edie Brickell‘s “Good Times Bad Times” and Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel‘s “Killing Me Softly With His Song” which brought popular most notably by Roberta Flack and later by the Fugees, they gave a sweet ending to the opening ceremony of this photography exhibition.

A picture can speak a thousand words. We have heard that lines, now we have seen the prove. Mia’s spectacular works have told us about many things that we missed to see or feel. These moments are precious, and thanks to Mia we now can enjoy them very well. If you come to Bandung from July 11 to August 7, make sure you spend some times to visit Potluck Coffee Bar and Library. These pictures are just too good to be missed. Thank you Klab Jazz and Potluck Coffee Bar and Library to expose the importance of these “silent music” through photographies. But most of all, congratulation Mia. keep the spirit up and keep providing us with more photos.

A photo can speak a thousand words. Yes, we believe so too. No matter how good you make an article, it won’t be enough if you don’t include some pictures to strengthen your point. Photos as a part of documentation can capture many important moments that might never happen again. Through these photos we can leave a legacy to the next generations, just like how we learned from the previous ones through many documentations. No matter what, photography is simply one of the most important part of it. That’s the reason why you always see tons of pictures at jazzuality.com along with the reports.

Jazz is not only about concerts, songs and albums. Jazz is not only about the musicians. We should never forget the photographers who sometimes have to fight their ways against the crowds in order to capture the golden moment. Thanks to them we can feel the tense, the nuance even the magic of an event even without being there. For me, these jazz photographers are also noted as heroes, for without them jazz won’t become as big as it is today.

Klab Jazz in cooperation with Potluck Coffee Bar and Library presents a special event called “Jazz Poster and Post It”, a jazz photography exhibition taken from some local and international scale events by Mia Damayanti Sjahir, the official photographer of Klab Jazz. Jazz concerts are important, but we shouldn’t forget the importance of jazz photographies as well. This kind of events are just as important as the concerts, for that we should give our best to support it too. There are many photos available to spoil your eyes and feelings.

You might wonder who Mia Damayanti is. For us, this cheerful and energic lovely lady is special. She’s been a great friends who we used to “rumble” with together in many events, such as at many editions of Jazz Break Revival, Halaman Monthly Jazz, Jazz Goes to Campus, Ngayogjazz Festival and Java Jazz Festival to name a few. Besides her work as an enterpreneur in event and wedding organizer, her passion in the photography field is very strong too. She always know how to grab the moment using her camera and the results appeared as fantastic. We have known her at least two years, we met often in various occassions, concerts and events, working together, and we really feel her spirit. she has colored the Klab Jazz community with her stunning photographs, all for free, and now it’s time for Klab Jazz to return the favor.

There will be some categories from Mia’s works to see at the cozy Potluck Coffee Bar and Library for almost a month including stage photography and journalistic photography, just some among the other categories like still life and essay photography. The photos will be presented in various sizes such as the poster size (A0 and A1), post it (5 x 7.5 cm) and some standard 16R size. As the Potluck keeps strengthen their positioning in jazz through series of live concerts and jazz library, this photography exhibition will give more power to their efforts.

Some of Mia Damayanti’s photographs

How do you keep the jazz on in Bandung? One of the way, of course, is by keep presenting it everywhere in rising scale. That’s exactly what happen. Jazz has back to color up cafes and restos in Bandung nowadays, and it’s really a good sign. Not only blossoming but also with improvements. We’ve seen many talented jazz artists from Jakarta arrived on scene and joined hands with the local talents, united with the same passion delivering what they do best, yes, it’s jazz.

Just these past previous months we’ve seen this pulse getting stronger and stronger. We got the new jazz generation Shadow Puppets at Potluck’s Fresh Comeback Celebration with Dira, last month it was the native Malagasy son, the wild saxophonist F.A. Talafaral of Sarimanouk Quartet, performed at Sunday Jazz at Potluck June edition, and now we have the July edition of Sunday Jazz, this time featuring another great band in 4, Sandy Winarta Quartet.

Sandy Winarta, the versatile jazz drummer is one of the most wanted drummer today in Indonesia’s music scene. This native Bali son is still young, but he’s contributed a lot. His endless passion and energy has placed him in many parts of jazz. Besides his role as the drummer of some bands including Sarimanouk Quartet and Pitoelas Big Band, he’s also active as a composer and music teacher. His experience has been wonderful so far by his appearances in many kinds of concert, from small to big sized orchestra. Just a couple of month ago he teamed up with the legendary jazz icon Indra Lesmana and fast-rising bassist Barry Likumahuwa to mark the birth of Indonesia’s Jazz Movement in a special event called Mostly Jazz. There are still more to come from him of course, considering he’s still young but already has a complete skill.

Now he formed his new group, Sandy Winarta Quartet. This group consists of his close friends including The Groove‘s brilliant keyboard who also works as a composer Ali Akbar, the young bassist/music teacher who we believe will become big in the future Doni Sundjoyo and the rising guitarist Aditya Bayu. Speaking of Ali Akbar, he just finished he’s tour visiting 5 cities with the extravaganza of Urban Jazz Crossover 2010 both as playing musician and team of arrangers.

The lineup for Sunday Jazz IV July Edition at Potluck Coffee Bar and Library wasn’t stop there, because we also got Iman Brata Trio with his cool style of bringing blues more into jazz, and also the post bop keyboardist Sonny Akbar with his Quartet. Imagine all these great teams performed in a relaxing cafe that serves delicious beverages and snacks with library, including a very special jazz section in one corner. By having the Sunday Jazz as the result of collaboration between Klab Jazz and Potluck regularly, we can be sure that jazz will keep rising in Bandung.

The cool weather with heavy rain was perfect to have a jazz gig. Iman Brata Trio opened up the event with simakDialog‘s song written by Tohpati entitled “Sidewalk Stories”. Their own new song which was just made came on, then followed by a traditional folk song turned into fusion with strong rock sense, “Gambang Suling”. “All the Things You Are” became their playground with cool guitar effects all over. The bluesy rock continued on taken from Miles Davis‘ collection. As Harty, the vocalist came on stage, why not having a little reggae? That was they brought, a famous Bob Marley‘s song “Is This Love” with some blues toppings. A traditional Sundanese folk song was next, “Bajing Luncat”. Iman Brata Trio went a lot lighter for the last song, taking on a groovy track, Andien‘s “Milikku Selalu”. Abank Kartadibrata Sulaiman (guitar and vocal), Ade Sulaiman Kramadibrata (drums) and Gabriel (bass) formed as Iman Brata Trio is a really promising band. Their delightful touch of blues, the experiment on guitar effects and also a visit on the vintage rock progresive is all over them. With their strong concept we’re sure they will go on higher soon.

Sonny Akbar Quartet took the stage. Bringing his fellows Edward Manurung (drums), Tuwuh Sarwoprasodjo (bass) and Arief Rinoko on sax, they were ready to deliver w2hat they got. The first song appeared in trio, it was Radiohead’s “Exit Music”. Arief joined in and they went on boppin’ the stage with manouvers everywhere. “Stolen Moment” was the next one in where they went exploring the streaming melodies. Arief was wild with his sax. “Caravan” was brought in new mood, a lot more heavier than we used to know. Huge applauses were given to them in the end.

Finally Sandy Winarta Quartet appeared on stage. For the first song they brought “Maiden Voyage”, a classic composition of Herbie Hancock. It was a nice voyage indeed, as they melted completely into their song. All had fun, smiling, laughing and expressive on stage. It was also nice to see Ali Akbar returned to his core in heavy jazz. Miles Davis‘ “So what” was next, again pinned in cool explorative style of playing. They went on in full speed driving with this one.

Sandy Winarta then went explaining about the band and concept. “It’s the group where we like to play standards”, Sandy said. “I just love to take standards as the template and then go on with our creativity in playing.” he continued. For sure this is a very powerful group where we can have many hopes within. The chemistry, the connection, the skill, the passion, all there with them. Too bad Sandy will leaving Indonesia in August to continue his study, we hope the best for him and may he bring more surprises after that.

Sandy Winarta Quartet continued with a song written by Rodgers and Hart for the musical comedy, “I’d Rather Be Right”, the song the jazz lovers know so well, “Have You Met Miss Jones”. A set of other songs were brought including Thelonious Monk‘s “Rhythm-a-Ning”, “All the Things You Are” and “Blues in the Closet”. The crowds didn’t let them close the show. So, they gave one encore, it was Clifford “Brownie” Brown‘s song, “Sandhu”. Sandy Winarta Quartet turned to be a highly dangerous band with full freedom both in creativity and playing style. You could see how they just let their soul lose on stage and brought everything out from their hearts. If this is the style of Sandy Winarta Quartet, we are sure that they will keep stunning everyone wherever they go. Guys, you are brilliant!

Again, a remarkable Sunday Jazz was presented at the cozy Potluck. It wasn’t just an ordinary live music, but presented with quality. May there be more to come. Thank you Klab Jazz, Potluck, all the performers and everyone behind this event, including the cool audiences for the support. Stay tune for more Sunday Jazz here at jazzuality.com!

Jazz heat is getting more and more intense at Potluck Coffee Bar and Library. At the third edition of Sunday Jazz at Potluck last month we got many great talents, including the wonder kid David Manuhutu with a special guest star F.A. Talafaral of Sarimanouk Quartet, the wild and dangerous saxophonist that reminds us of Coltrane’s ruling era. (Check out the report here). They managed to stunned everyone with their nonstop action, and it was incredible.

Following that scene, this month Klab Jazz and Potluck bring a very interesting lineup for Sunday Jazz at Potluck IV, July edition. Check this out: Sandy Winarta, the most wanted jazz drummer in Indonesia today will appear in quartet formation consists of highly skilled personnel. The formation incuding Doni Sundjoyo, the complete bassist who knows how to bring the bass alive, not only as rhythm section but also “sing” beside teaching and working as arranger, The Groove‘s keyboardist Ali akbar who also highly capable in composition including being a part of Urban Jazz Crossover‘s team of arrangers and Aditya Bayu, the rising guitarist who graduated from LPM Farabi, they are the musicians to fill up the Sandy Winarta Quartet. Imagine these talents joined hands, for sure they will deliver something big.

Besides Sandy Winarta Quartet we will also have Iman Brata Trio. This is a great group with interesting concept. They have the habit to give heavy blues compositions to go deeper into jazz. They will appear high again of course, just as how they stunned the crowds at Djarum Super’s Jazzy Ozzie last month. And last but not least Sonny Akbar Quartet will also perform in this fourth edition.

By looking at this lineup we can be sure that jazz will spice up our relaxing time this Sunday. If you are in Bandung this weekend, make sure to join us. Not only the live performance of these great bands, you can also enjoy the great drinks and snacks along with reading some of the cool collection of jazz library provided by Klab Jazz and Potluck.

Time for Sunday Jazz! It was another edition of regular jazz event provided by Klab Jazz in cooperation with two cafes so far. After Sunday Jazz at Potluck on June 6, Klab Jazz continued to roll another jazz event at the next cafe,Ruang Putih , called Sunday Jazz at Ruang Putih II on Sunday, June 20, 2010

This is something very interesting. We’ve seen a new trend on how to provide closer to the audiences, in cool and cozy way. This is a brilliant way to reach younger segmentation and Klab Jazz has seen this trend as good chance to introduce jazz to wider segment. The respond so far has been awesome. We have witnessed more and more youngsters came to enjoy the gigs, both at Ruang Putih and Potluck Coffee Bar and Library.

It’s nice to see a café with lots of live music like Ruang Putih. Not only jazz, they also serve many other genres including blues. For the jazz section, they collaborate with Klab Jazz which surely know how to present jazz in quality. After the first Sunday Jazz at Ruang Putih last month, Sunday Jazz at Ruang Putih II brought three bands which were Cameo, Pineapple also Iman Rahman and Friends. First of all, let’s take a look at the venue. It’s a café with the concept to fit the youngsters and young at heart. The majority of white color presents the purity that enable you to feel relax and comfortable. The stage was set on the left side of the entrance, that so all the audiences could enjoy the live performance from just about anywhere inside the café, while sipping their drinks and munching their tasty snacks. It’s a perfect choice as well, as the stage could be clearly seen from the street to attract the by-passers.

Cameo is one of the band who participated on Kampung Jazz 2010 audition with very cool fusion of their style. They were unfortunate on that moment because one of the personnel was unable to come due to an accident. With only one song it was difficult to decide them as the winner, but still we saw potential even with one song. At Ruang Putih Cameo got the chance to show what they really got, and they didn’t waste the chance at all. They opened strong with a famous fusion song by Karimata, “Take Off To Padang”, which was presented heavily in West Sumatra’s traditional melody and typical rhythm. Some more songs were delivered including “Nothing Personal”, “Time Out”, “Bluelles Pie”, and ”Jazz Crime”. We feel happy that we have another young band now to carry on the fusion in Bandung.

A sudden jam session was made due to the trouble of next performers on their way to arrive. Gallang Perdana Dalimunthe teamed up with Gito, the coordinator of ITJazz and Rino. Interestingly they came out with complex compositions for this sudden teaming. They brought Charlie Parker’s “Au Privave”, Sonny Rollins’ “St Thomas” and Chick Corea’s “Spain” nicely just like they had gone through a lot of rehearsals.

After the break Pineapple took the stage. Pineapple is the group of Ventje Music School (VMS) students and teachers which was formed in 2005. The group consists of Ule Suleman on drums, Martin on bass, Ray on keyboard and Welly on guitar. Again we got a really cool fusion on stage. They brought their own song, “Take It Easy” with a nice rockin’ guitar embedded in jazz pattern. The chill out moment came with “Hard Tired” , then they gave a speeding song “Rattle Trump” with guitar distortion rocking the night away and closed their session with a cool samba rhythm on Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee”.

Finally it was the turn for Iman Rahman and Friends as the last band to perform. Iman Rahman and Friends has performed a couple of time such as at Sunday Jazz at Potluck and Frenzy Jazz Night at Neo Calista. Iman Rahman was known as one of the personnel of Chalk for Cheese as the bassist and now he’s taking one step further by leading his own band with Egon Firman on keyboard, Arief Baradja on drum and Oki on guitar. We could never forget the charming smile of Iman Rahman every time he performs. With their style going more into ethnic taking on Javanese pentatonic pattern, they explored every melody still in the funky beat that would not be difficult for us to listen to. Iman knows how to bring his bass forward without changing the flow of the song. The ethnical pentatonic were brought nicely through “Tegar” and “Bermain-main”. Andos was called to join them and sang Halmahera’s hit “Khayalanku”. The last song brought the mystical ethnic pattern even stronger, “Berkelana Sendiri”.

After all, the very entertaining event had to end. With the crowds of the audiences, we could feel the satisfaction and now we can’t wait for another jazz event from Klab Jazz appears in another café. Which café will join the club to cheer the jazz up? So much curiousity on that! Thank you to Klab Jazz, Ruang Putih, all the performing bands, sponsors, the crowds, and everyone involved in this successful monthly event. Hope to see you again next month. Keep it up!

Right after a fresh start of Potluck‘s new beginning which marked their return to jazz the concept, the third Sunday Jazz was held today, Sunday, June 6, 2010. We had a big party yesterday to celebrate three things: Potluck’s 7th Anniversary, the opening of Klab Jazz Corner @ Potluck Library and also its fresh comeback. Do check our report on the party. Imagine this: a cafe that serves delicious foods and drinks, lots of live jazz gigs with a special section of jazz library full with reading materials related to jazz. How cool is that? That section is even placed right on the left side of the entrance, you will notice it right away just when you step in. Dwi Cahya Yuniman, the coordinator of Klab Jazz has generously donated his valuable collections to fill the racks with various jazz literatures. He has started it, and he invites everyone to contribute any jazz books or magazines to be placed in there. Now it’s clear that Potluck Coffee Bar & Library is really serious with their jazz concept. For us, it makes us happy to know that finally there’s a seriously cool jazz cafe in Bandung.

For Sunday Jazz June Edition the lineup was made very interesting. 3 groups were scheduled to show what they got: Grace Sahertian and Friends, Iman Rahman and Friends and David Manuhutu Trio. A special guest star was listed as well this month. It was the leader of Sarimanouk Quartet, the saxophonist/pianist/composer, the Madagascar born F.A. Talafaral. Just by taking a quick glance at the lineup you could already know that they are really serious in building their jazz image.

Iman Rahman is known as the bassist of Chalk for Cheese, the new nu jazz/groove band in the block. Now he steps further and dares himself to make his own band. He calls it “Iman Rahman and Friends”, featuring Arif Baradja (drums), Egon Firman (keyboard), Andos Riando (vocal) and Oki (guitar). With his own band, Iman could show his real color and bring bass to stand in front. It worked very well. Iman Rahman and Friends started the June edition of Sunday Jazz with “Epistrophy”. The second one was served really cool in ethnical touch. Series of pentatonic scales and runs were out from the stage. What a surprise to hear this landscapic Sundanese ethnic music in modern fusion. Andos the vocalist came on stage and together they delivered a delicious version of “Khayalan”, a famous song from a super fusion band in the 90′s, Halmahera.“Evidence” was next, followed by “Orange Colored Sky” in a delight and playful way.

Grace Sahertian is not just an ordinary soulful singer with strong voice. She is truly an artist, because not only sing, she also active as a contemporary artist using fiber as the media. If before we knew her as the vocalist of soulful/groove band “Palm From Moodytunes”, now she is riding on her most recent passion that actually was her dream from long time ago, exploring the world music. For doing that she has to learn voicings seriously, and we could see that the hard work has paid off. She showed us that she could do such stunning vocal exploration, going up and down the stream of melody smoothly. Grace Sahertian and Friends, that’s the new band to support this idea, in which she brings some of her close colleagues to join her including Tesla Manaf Effendi (guitar), Sindhu Bayusekti (bass), Edward Manurung (drum) and Christ Stanley (keyboard) to deliver a special tribute to Pat Metheny and Anna Maria Jopek.

The first song was “Are You Going With Me”, a song of Pat Metheny that got the lyrics by Anna Maria Jopek. They kept on sailing with the bossa patterned jazz entitled “Better Days Ahead”, and the groovy “And Then I Knew” that both got Grace’s scat treatment. “Always and Forever” another Pat Metheny song with Polish language written by Anna Maria Jopek were delivered in mellow tune. It was really nice to hear this song while the rain poured down from the sky. For the last song they brought “See the World” It wasn’t Grace that we knew before, but we should Thank God for blessing her with a great vocal.

David Manuhutu was just celebrated his 18th birthday. He is one of the rare young jazz pianist who could play all kinds of jazz variety, completely, since an early age. While mostly kids at his age are still playing around, he already walks his career professionally. David has many achievements and experiences. He already got the chance to play with many living legends including the virtuoso Bubi Chen, the legendary Oele Pattiselano, Jeffrey Tahalele, Riza Arshad and the top jazz stars such as Arief Setiadi, Nial Djuliarso and many more. Not only with local musicians, he has also collaborated with international greats like Lewis Pragasam and LOGIC, an Australian jazz group. He has appeared twice at the prestigious Java Jazz Festival, in 2009 and 2010.

“His progress is really fast. He has exceeded the normal process for kids at his age. In my opinion he is a jazz musician.” said Riza Arshad about David. The piano virtuoso Bubi Chen said “David has a very strong sense of melody, especially when he improvises.” All these lead to one conclusion: this wonderkid was born to play music, he was born to jazz.

For tonight he brought his trio consisted of two more senior musicians: Rudy Zulkarnaen (upright bass) and Arifandi (drums).

Let’s take a look at the special guest star. Can you pronounce this? Ramiandriosa Faralahiherivolannirina Andrianolazaina. If it’s difficult, just refer him as Talafaral. He was born in Madagascar from a musical family. He started with piano but then switched to sax after he was graduated from high school. He already has 15 years of illustrious career, joining many international music project such as “Mifandamoro”, “Harmattan”, “Burkina Faso”, “Groove Suppa” and “Potomac Jazz Project ‘The Scenic Route”. In 2008 he formed the Sarimanouk Quartet, a band with unique musical vision. Soon Talafaral will move to India. He will still continue the Sarimanouk Quartet no matter what, and it won’t be too difficult since India is not really too far from Indonesia. Before he performed Talafaral said that they were going to play Wayne Shorter‘s songs. “People rarely play Wayne Shorter’s songs, I always want to play it” he said. One thing for sure, he’s a wild saxophonist, and we knew it was going to be really cool to see him play.

Stunning. That was the first impression we got when they started their session. Nice bop pattern on series of songs were delivered that really caught the mood of the audiences. Talafaral showed a remarkable saxophone playing. He could appear really wild and then went mellow. David Manuhutu, Rudy and Ari blended harmoniously, especially with the wide room of exploration provided in every songs. As Talafaral said, they brought some Wayne Shorter’s collections such as “Footpirnts”, “Infant Eyes” and “Invitation”.

A very cool version of “Summertime” in funky suit was brought on stage by Talafaral and David Manuhutu Trio. The crowds digged it very well. Many people nodded their head or tapped their feet following the music. They gave a stunning climax by playing lighting fast with unbelievable improvisations, They even included “Bye Bye Blackbird” in medley. What a way to close the show!

It was another well done Sunday Jazz at Potluck Coffee Bar & Library. It was stunning from start to finish. The special appearance by Talafaral really gave more flavor to this month’s event. With a harmonious collaboration between Klab Jazz and Potluck like this we can wish to have more editions in the future. See you next month!

Ask the youngsters and young at hearts who live in Bandung about Potluck, and they will know it directly. That should prove enough how Potluck Coffee Bar and Library has deeply attached in their hearts and minds. Potluck Coffee Bar and Library has been known as the perfect place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere with friends and family while shipping the freshly brewed coffee, tasting the delicious snacks, and also let’s not forget the unique concept of combining the food concept with library. This is, as far as I know, the only cafe in Bandung that also provides many selection of books to choose. When the concept strectches to enter the music matter, they have been going through some changes. Potluck started their music concept with jazz. With series of collaboration with Klab Jazz back in 2007, Potluck used to held numerous live jazz event on their cozy venue. But then it was stopped. The concept was changed for a while to go with other segments of music. Now after going through a fully renovation process, Potluck Coffee Bar and Library is back again in businesss. And here’s the good news: They were decided to go back to the way they started. Jazz is once again the main course of Potluck’s music concept. Once Lucille G Husaen, the General Manager of Potluck told us “it’s actually been jazz all these times.” Realizing that, Potluck has made a perfect decision to bring jazz in front once again just like they used to be in the past.

The collaboration with KlabJazz was established once again. We have seen two great edition of Sunday Jazz last April and May. The next one is coming tomorrow, Sunday, June 6, 2010. Not only the Sunday Jazz, but they also present Afternoon Jazz every Wednesday and Thursday starting 5:00 pm local time and also Sunday Jazz Brunch every Sunday Morning starting at 11:00 am. It’s a smart choice afterall, since they are targeting the active segment amongst 25 years old and up to fill up their “homey and relaxing” concept. With their new tagline, “My kind of Life. Positive.”, everything seems perfectly fit in place.

Let’s now talk about the Library. They have been providing numerous reading materials from books to magazines that can be read on the spot for free. You can even rent them after fulfilling the membership terms. As jazz re-appears as the main course of Potluck, now the Library has a special section, the jazz section. They gave a very special name as well for it: Klab Jazz Corner @ Potluck Library. Now you can find various magazines and books related to jazz. It’s a good way to nourish your knowledge about the wonderful world of jazz while enjoying your relaxing hours with your loved ones along with tasting the delicious menus. So far it was Dwi Cahya Yuniman, the coordinator of Klab Jazz who donated his jazz books and magazines collection to fill up the section. “Some people asked me, what if those magazines and books dissapear? I said, let it be. It’s still better to place them in here and give benefit to many people than just staying cold on my rack or attic.” said Dwi Cahya Yuniman. As how he always dream to socialize jazz as much as possible, sharing these collections would surely make him happy.

A comeback party was made on Saturday, June 5, 2010. It’s a party to celebrate “The New Beginning”, a Fresh Comeback Celebration. going back to the jazz concept along with the establishment of special jazz section on the library. On the invitation they have stated that there would be jazz performance featuring a surprise guest star!

Besides making this event as a come back party, it was also made as a birthday celebration. Potluck has been in service for 7 years now and this year may be the start of something big for them. We sincerely wish them all the best for that.

The party was opened by an acoustic trio, Mr Bean & The Teddy Bear. Bravely they brought the new version of ST 12‘s “Cari Pacar Lagi” and some cool version of traditional folk song like “Manuk Dadali” and “Yamko Rambe Yamko” in jazz approach. After a short break due to the prayer calling came a unique performance of Deugalih, delivering a poem musicalization. He played guitar while singing his poems. Deugalih is a poet who can also interpret his writings into cool guitar melody and sing. It was surprisingly creative.

The official ceremony of opening the Klab Jazz Corner @ Potluck Library came next. The senior jazz man Yongki Nusantara got the honor to cut the curtain with Dwi cahya Yuniman and the owner of Potluck, Pungky Paulina.

The stage went on again with the stylish acoustic band De’Natu, a band that regularly fill in the Sunday Jazz Brunch at Potluck Coffee Bar and Library. They brought the first song “Tersiksa Lagi” that was famous by various artists including Utha Likumahuwa and Syaharani. The next song was a surprise, the Incubus‘ hit “Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song).” De’Natu delivered it cool acoustically. Daniel Sahuleka‘s evergreen “Don’t Sleep Away The Night” and Edie Brickell‘s “Good Times Bad Times” continued their session. The last song from De’Natu was the acoustic version of Billy Joel‘s “Just The Way You Are”.

Another acoustic band named “Room” continued the sweet performance of De’Natu. This band of 5 delivered Robin Thicke‘s “Sweetest Love” to open their show. then they sang their own song, a groovy beat “Kau Datang”. A duet came next taking on Bee Gees‘ “How Deep Is Your Love.” After delivering their own song, they sang Sandhy Sondoro‘s “Malam Biru” in a very different style. If you are into the groovy kind of songs just like Soulvibe, you will like this band as well.

A newly formed band appeared next. It was a special band came from Jakarta consists of emerging new generation of jazz musicians. The band called “Shadow Puppets”, or in Indonesia we call it “Wayang Golek.” This band with a very unique name consists of friends who firstly gathered at the Henning Sieverts workshop which was made by Serambi Jazz last year in October. They found chemistry with each other since then, and went on establishing a band together. Shadow Puppets consists of:
Indrawan Tjhin (contra bass), a fast rising jazz instrumentalist who graduated from Koninklijk Conservatorium (Royal Conservatory) of The Hague in Den Haag majoring Jazz Performance. Coming back to Indonesia, he got many chances to appear directly, and that’s no surprise since he has complete skills including a “nice to see” performance. You can see how he’s so into his gig just by watching his face on stage.
Robert Mulyarahardja (guitarist), a highly skillful guitarist graduated from Berklee College of Music. Still young but he’s surely ready to appear high on the Indonesian jazz scene.
Irsa Destiwi (piano). We know her first of all by joining the international band “Bali Lounge 2″ several years ago. Her stylish way of playing, the ability to bring from pop to serious jazz pattern in complex chords has placed her into the top female jazz pianist in Indonesia today. Besides joining Shadow Puppets, Irsa is also the pianist of a cool duo, Bandanaira with Lea simanjuntak.
Shandy Satya (drum) is a young drummer from Institut Musik Daya. He was the student of the versatile drummer Sandhy Winarta.

Strong combination of talents means quality, and that was what they showed on stage. A tribute to Thelonious Monk entitled “Monkisms” was the first song they brought. The crowds really loved it and gave huge applause just when they were done with it. Everyone seemed to be hypnotized now, as we all focused on their performance. The next song was Irsa’s own composition entitled “Shades of Orange” served chill and cool. Irsa got the chance to show herself with her fingers dancing on the piano keys ellegantly. “Unspoken Thought” was next, again composed by Irsa Destiwi. It’s another cool playing with enough room for improvisations, and that drawed the crowds’ attention really well. The last song was “Pete’s Tune”, served amazingly just like the previous ones.

A lovely solo jazz piano recital presented by a beautiful young pianist Diah Ayu. It was really nice to hear two of the songs we all know, “Beautiful Love” and “Satin Doll”.

Shadow Puppets came back again on stage, this time bringing Dira J Sugandi. “Eventhough I came from Bandung, it was rare for me to have the chance performing on my own hometown” she said. For that she extended her thanks to Potluck and Klab Jazz for inviting her. The first song from Dira and the Shadow Puppets was “I Wish You Love”, a famous heartbreaking song that originally written in French. Dira sang it smooth and sweet, sending the love from the stage to the audiences. The sweet bossa tune “My Little Boat” came before Dira showed her amazing vocal range with Etta James‘ “At Last”. It was really nice to have a romantic night session with Dira’s appearance together with the Shadow Puppets.

Shadow Puppets will release their mini EP this coming July 3rd, when they have a gig at Salihara. It’s going to be wonderful to have a new highly talented group like Shadow Puppets. Very promising indeed, and we wish them all the best to climb higher in the near future.

Another solo jazz piano recital came next by Stanley. He played two songs “Someday My Prince Will come” and “Spain”. Just like Diah Ayu, Stanley gave a stunning landscapic jazz piano playing. Sunday Jazz will bring solo piano recitals in the future, and tonight we got the chance to taste two of them.

The crowds were still filling up every space of Potluck as Iman Brata Trio prepared themselves on stage. They brought one of Coltrane‘s number, “Mr PC”. Two more songs came from them, “Tin Tin Deo” by Kenny Burrell and “All the Things You Are”. Again Iman Brata Trio gave out a great show just like they did at Frenzy Jazz Night some weeks ago.

The last performer was G/E/T. They gave a burning performances. Tesla, Gallang and Edward were on fire playing their repertoires including “One Year Dinner”, “Migraine”, “Play Dead”, “3 Months Already” and “Patas 05 AC”. Shouts and applauses were given to this excellent trio, and that was the end of the party.

Whether you want to have a nice relaxing hours with jazz or learn more about jazz through reading materials, or you want to have both while enjoying various foods and freshly brewed coffee, now you know where to go. Potluck Coffee Bar and Library has made themselves appear very jazzy, and we love it! And of course, what a celebration it was. Nonstop live performances for almost 7 hours marked the anniversary of Potluck and the launching of Klab Jazz Corner @ Potluck. Congratulations, Potluck, and Happy Anniversary! Also we give props to Klab Jazz for their consistant and continuous efforts to socialize jazz. May jazz be alive well in Bandung starting from Potluck. We wish you nothing but the best. Keep jazzin’!
